Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain? The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart; whose tongue utters no slander, who does no wrong to a neighbor, and casts no slur on others; who despises a vile person but honors those who fear the Lord; who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind; who lends money to the poor without interest; who does not accept a bribe against the innocent. Who doesn’t want to be invited to dinner at God’s place? Think about getting an invite to a good friend's home. When we get that invite it is the kindest gesture. This kind of invitation is what makes us feel like we belong.
Belonging is something we all seek. When we feel like we belong, a sense of ease and comfort overcomes us. Belonging is important.
God lets us know exactly what we can do to ensure we feel a sense of belonging. We have always belonged to Him; however, sometimes we can feel like we don’t. It is in our disobedience that we become far from Him and thus do not feel we belong.
The way in which to live that He lists here may seem like no brainers. They may even seem easy. Then we take a look at our lives and recognize that we struggle with that sense of belonging. This is when we must ask ourselves how far are we from Him? When we keep these commands we are never shaken.
Considerations for your planner:
- Can you remember a time you felt complete belonging to God? Write that memory down as a reminder for the times that belonging feels out of reach.
A Prayer for Our Community:
Father God, Help us to heed your words. We want to always know that we belong to You. We want to feel our belonging. Help us to obey so that we are not far from You. We know that through our obedience we are able to draw closer to You and in this way we will feel how much we really belong. Amen.
