We Can Be Joyful in Everything

We Can Be Joyful in Everything

Joy can be the predominant feeling for everything in our lives. Even in testing and trials we can be joyful. In fact we should be joyful. It is through difficult circumstances that we can lean into God and allow Him to grow the fruits of the spirit within us. Fruits like love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (See Galatians 5:22-23) When we really think about it, true joy only comes when we know how blessed we are. Coming through tough times gives us perspective for when times are good. Thus, we should never forget to rejoice in difficult situations, as our perspective will be widened and our capacity for joy will be grown.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

James 1:2-4 NIV

Learning how to praise is an incredible gift. It is through praise that we can feel the Holy Spirit inside of us. It is like a surge that can take your breath away and give you goosebumps all in the same moment. Praise elevates our joy, because God sees that our hearts are with, for, and dependent on Him. Embracing what God does for us is the best thing we can do for Him. (See Romans 12:1-2) He deserves all our praise as we live in His grace. Grace that was not earned, but that was freely given so that we may live and live eternally. Praising God will bring us more joy than we could ever muster from the things the world says will fill us with joy.

Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy.

Psalm 47:1 NIV

Considerations for your planner:

  • Write down any challenge you may be facing right now. How can you find joy in your challenge?
  • Have you praised God for today? Take a moment to write down what it looks like to you to praise.

A Story of Joy in Challenges:

God walked my family (my 2 sons and I) through an unexpected household move this past month. There had been threats and conflicts leading up to the final ultimatum for previous months. It was confusing what to take seriously from the landlord.

My time in the Word and devotional kept me grounded and moving forward. God revealed the next step to me, step by step, often after a good night of sleep. So much more money was needed than we had and miraculously money came to us! Not like I thought it would. Sometimes a payment plan was suggested or someone gave us generous financial gifts.

Seeing God in the Bible daily reminds me that He is the same provider for me that He was for Joseph and Daniel and Esther and everyone!
